Be your own interior designer: 2 and 3-day workshops,
9:45am - 4:30pm (2-day intensive), 10am - 3:30pm (3-day)

This three day workshop will cover the basics of interior design, including lifestyle; ideas and vision; space and balance - creating a scheme that flows with the rest of the house.

Day one – Introduction to interior design

  • The basics of interior design
  • How to survey a room
  • Looking at colour
  • Drawing a floor plan to 1:20 scale
  • Creating a mood board

Day two – Designing your room

  • Planning a furniture layout
  • Drawing a floor plan and simple elevations at 1:50 scale
  • Designing a lighting scheme
  • Choosing fabrics and materials

Day three – Putting the scheme together

  • Creating a sample board
  • Preparing a budget for your scheme

Day one itinerary

  • 10 am Arrival Breakfast of tea and coffee, fresh orange and apple juice and a selection of Danish pastries
  • 10:10 The basics of interior design A series of talks, covering: Lifestyle - the way we live and how a room is used Ideas and vision on different design styles The importance of space and balance in a layout Use of flooring, walls, lighting and soft furnishings All lectures are supported with fact sheets for your folder
  • 11:30 Home survey We will review your home survey fact sheet
  • 12:30 pm Lunch A two-course lunch with wine
  • 1:00 A brief look at colour We will look at ways to transform your scheme by using colour, how to use a colour wheel and the effect different colours have on us
  • 1:30 Drawing a floor plan to 1:20 scale How to draw a basic floor plan to scale, with doors, windows, fireplaces and any other architectural features
  • 2:00 Creating a mood board The importance of making a mood board and how to put one together. You will be able to use our ‘inspiration library' of books, samples and magazine cuttings to create your mood board. We will be on hand with any inspiration and guidance you may need
  • 3:00 Afternoon tea With home made cakes and biscuits

Day two itinerary

  • 10 am Arrival Breakfast of tea and coffee, fresh orange and apple juice and a selection of Danish pastries
  • 10:15 Planning a furniture layout How to design a furniture layout, using scale furniture shapes. By identifying natural ‘pathways' in a room, work out how much space you have to play with. We will also look at space-saving ideas, using hidden storage and bespoke furniture
  • 11:15 Drawing a floor plan and elevations at 1:50 scale We will take your furniture layout and transforming it into a 1:50 scale plan and simple elevations
  • 12:30 pm Lunch A two-course lunch with wine
  • 1:15 Designing a lighting scheme A brief look at lighting design, including how new technology could work in your home. How to draw a lighting ‘overlay' onto your floorplan, using the correct architectural symbols
  • 10:00 Choosing fabrics and materials My favourite part! A shopping trip through our extensive library of pattern books, furniture and product catalogues. You will be able to buy through Bowerman-Gill with discounts on the normal recommended retail price, and if you're after a particular fabric or wallpaper, we will do our best to source it
  • 3:00 Afternoon tea With home made cakes and biscuits

  • 10:15 Preparing a budget for your scheme When to splurge and where to save; how to be creative with your budget, by mixing luxurious products and evocative fabrics, but without the huge expense Scheduling: how to put all the tasks in the right sequence You will be given a work sheet to help work out the quantities and the cost of your room design; for those planning to set up as interior designers, guidance on fees
  • 12:30 pm Lunch A two-course lunch with wine
  • 1:00 Creating a sample board Using the samples from your chosen products, how to put together a professional-looking sample board
  • 3:00 Afternoon tea With home made cakes and biscuits
